For Accompanying Spouses

Career Coaching to support career-oriented accompanying spouses in finding solutions.   The process may lead to a local job search, a virtual job,  a new career direction, a personal project, a degree program, an online business or volunteeer activities that support a professional life. It is vitally important that the spouse feel engaged, both socially and professionally,  in the new environment for an assignment to be a success.

There can be many very real obstacles to overcome.  In some cases, a spouse can’t work legally, in other cases,  there is nothing available in their field of expertise, their credentials are not recognized or they don’t have the language skills.

Yet an accompanying spouse can still have a professionally rewarding experience abroad. Coaching can help shift perspectives and open up new thinking to find a solution.

Transition Coaching to support accompanying spouses that may need help in achieving a new balance and feeling comfortable in their new environment.

I started my coaching sessions six months after moving to Rome. After 12 very busy years in publishing, I was happy to be taking a break. I hoped to reformulate my skills in a way that would enable me to develop myself and explore future possible paths, without returning to the workplace yet.

I felt that I had a treasure chest’s worth of mosaic pieces, skills, talents, interests and experiences that could be rearranged into entirely new formations, but needed help doing that. The sessions helped me piece together existing potential within me.

I was astonished at how productive the sessions were. Each one left me with brand new insights, inspiration and a greater sense of my potential.

The coaching relationship was very sincere and enabled me to formulate new paths that felt really authentic, those that would help me integrate my experiences, rather than fragment or create diverting offshoots. I succeeded in identifying a new direction that fits perfectly with my lifestyle, my future plans, my interests, loves and hobbies: to become a freelance publishing and print writer.

My issues became more complex when I moved abroad and solutions that were available to me in the US simply do not exist here. I appreciated Elizabeth’s way of gently nudging me to do things instead of becoming another “should” in my life and this allowed me to open up, uncurl and start moving again.Expats have an even harder time than others trying to realize their dreams. Elizabeth had an enormous amount of patience always simply encouraging me. She is truly excellent!
—Jackie, American, development lawyer, mother and accompanying spouse abroad – currently consulting with an international development organization while starting an online business (following a twelve-session Make Change Happen package)

My husband’s sabbatical year took us to Verona. Elizabeth was of great support as I helped our children adapt to the local Italian school and social system. I felt supported while I set up our family life and even create a life of my own – which led to writing a series of stories about our experience. We had a wonderful year that was a turning point in our lives.

Elizabeth guided me into thinking globally about my work objectives in order to arrive at a career goal that balanced both my work and life philosophies. The mental clarity she provided cleared the clutter from my mind that was holding me back from a decisive strategy. She also helped me to develop strategies to help clear outside obstacles to my goals.
—Raquel, American, lawyer, mother and expat spouse abroad (following a three-session Jumpstart Your Change package)

Elizabeth had a skillful way of tuning in to what was going on in my life at the given moment and adapting to giving me support in the best way suitable at that time. I always come away from her coaching sessions feeling really good about myself and my possibilities.
