For Your Managers on Assignment Abroad

Executive Coaching to consciously develop intercultual competencies that support top performance and global leadership potential.

Experience in another cultural environment does not automatically lead to intercultural competencies, cultural intelligence and a global mindset.  Like any other kind of learning, the best results come from focused, incremental work over time.

  • guided reflection on personal experiences to extract the learning,
  • customized strategies based on personal strengths, experiences, talents, personality traits,
  • constructively sharing “what works” with other expats,
  • meta-level conversations that support intercultural learning.

The logistics don’t have to be complicated and the costs don’t have to be high with a flexible schedule of virtual sessions by phone or over the internet.

As you build the program that best suits your needs, you may consider using one or more assessment tools. I am certified to administer and debrief the Certification to administer the Polaris Global Leadership Competency Model and 360° Assessment Survey for Global Leaders.

“Coaching can be particularly effective in times of change….While you may be confident in your abilities to take on new tasks, you may feel that an independent sounding board would be beneficial in helping you achieve a new level of performance…You may recognize that succeeding in a new role requires skills that you have not needed to rely on in the past, a coach may help sharpen those skills, particularly when you need to do so on the fly.”

I improved how I communicate with people from other cultures and my understanding of where gaps in communication may occur. I began to understand how culture has an impact on behavior.

Elizabeth understood that I was new to working with those from other cultures and was patient in helping me to overcome my obstacles. She made me aware of my inner strengths and the qualities that I already had to succeed.

This process made me want to experience life in other cultures.

I began coaching with Elizabeth, during a period in which work had slowed down and I wasn’t promoting myself. The work I did with Elizabeth helped me to better channel my energy, look into what was preventing me from acting and gain the necessary momentum to take off again.

The situation is in fact now completely different and I seem to have too much work. I would not, at the moment, require coaching for this new “problem”, hopefully. Though, if this trend continues, I might in the future!

Elizabeth is an insightful and capable professional. The sessions were effective for me to approach my decisions in a more detached way. They provided a good opportunity to stop and think about viable strategies for my professional career to take off. I will keep in touch with her and share my results.

A great journey I have done with Elizabeth. I have done the job, my thinking, my homework. I have decided each time what to talk about, and I have made my progress. Yet I have always felt Elizabeth’s close presence, and our partnership was a great thing for me to leverage upon.

Elizabeth has a great ability to be “next to you” even when things are not going as you had planned. Perhaps this is her greatest strength: to turn “the absurd” and “the impossible” into “possibility.”

I would recommend seeing Elizabeth to anyone who’s been putting off a large and difficult project forway too long, to anyone who’s been very busy procrastinating and who knows deep down they won’t actually get started on their own.

I was half-heartedly job searching after transferring to Rome a year ago and discovering that my new job was unfulfilling and unchallenging. I was struggling to start the wearisome job hunting process which is challenging enough back home where you have a network of friends and colleagues to help you. It’s even more daunting when you’re doing it from scratch in a foreign country, with fewer friends and no existing professional network.

Elizabeth helped me realize that despite what I thought, I had built up a small network already and I started from there. And then she helped me find ideas to go beyond with further options.

Like in many situations, part of the solution is admitting there’s a problem. For me, deciding to start seeing a coach was accepting that I had a big task in front of me that I didn’t want to get started on…. I required a bit of a kick in the pants to get started.

Meeting with Elizabeth on a regular basis kept me accountable to keep moving forward. Elizabeth also challenged my preconceived ideas as to how certain things are just not for you (networking in my case) or how others will react to your requests (always negatively was my assumption).

Now I’ve officially started with my job hunting!

I came to Elizabeth to work on a plan for a new project, and to overcome major procrastination issues in a new country and work field. Working alone, and starting up alone, after years in a comfortable position with a firm, I felt insecure and overwhelmed by the road ahead.

Elizabeth enabled me to get moving on a very challenging project, by helping me keep it “light”, and exciting, rather than focusing on the negatives that I had created in my worried mind. The weekly tasks were joyful and I looked forward to each session as I was seeing my massive project unravel before me!

Elizabeth has a gift to address each person’s weaknesses and blockage. The baby steps eventually facilitated a web of productivity that I could have never done on my own. Together, we discussed and decided what could realistically be done. Then I focused on doing that, not all of the steps at once. I no longer use the word “should” which was once a regular verb in my vocabulary.

Elizabeth taught me one of the most useful lessons in life. Now I feel more secure about where I am headed. Once again, I’m enjoying the process and journey, which is why I began this project in the first place!
